What if you don’t know how to write – writing sounds hard and what exactly do you write?

All of us has talents. My friend who works in a bank sells cars – I told him to show me by video how to get started, don’t get bogged down writing if that’s not your thing.

I advised him to tell me the tricks of the trade and what he would tell other people to look out for (such as a worn pedal).

I then asked him to write down in brief points what he said – he even got his wife to help transcribe what he said on the video. He now had a really simple video and notes of what he said.

He was able to turn the notes into a PDF and even had a cover. He is now selling his book and making some extra income – the initial hardwork has paid off and because his Ebook is now up on the web, he doesn’t have to do anything to get the sales coming in. So you don’t have to be good at writing to start earning cash from E-books.

This is my inner most thought process and it will give you an understanding is why my business is in a few percent that has grown year by year – 80% fail in the first year.I was working as a radio producer at the time and that’s the first key to all this.

I didn’t have the money to jack in my day job. I didn’t have space either to store stock and I had only a little cash so that narrowed down what I needed to do as a business.

I guess I could have trained as a plumber and gone out to service customers’ appliances after my day job but frankly I couldn’t see this I wanted to spend time with my wife and my new family.

There must be away of making money whilst I was at work.

It had to be something that would take money automatically and allow me to despatch orders in my own spare time at the weekend or in the evening (if I had time).

I spent alot of time researching products that could be sold. What could I offer that other shops couldn’t. I remember walking down London’s Oxford Street looking for products that I could sell – I figured if people were buying them there was a market.

Why then couldn’t these products also do well online? I was in fact using a marketing trick of seeing what my potential competitors were selling and then improving them.

Unlike these shops, I didn’t have space. I only had a limited budget too and and a back bedroom. The product I was to sell had to be something that was small enough to fit into my backbedroom, that offered high margins.

If I was doing it again I would set up an affiliate site.

Think about what you could do, follow your passion.

We all get down days and it’s frustrating when that extra money doesn’t seem to appear for your new business. Sales are zero, zilch, nil or close to it.

Your fantastic business start-up is still at that stage when  all your hard work just isn’t paying off. What do you do now – abandon all those hours of blood sweat and tears or keep flogging a dead horse?

Keep going

As a very successful business owner, I say keep going. The fact that you had an idea for a business, and have been running one (yes, even if it’ s a start up) means that you have passion. I take my hat off  to you for having those qualities.

Whether you are selling hobby stuff, like I do, shoes or whatever it may mean that  it’s more your business idea that needs tweaking. Unless you are bored of running the business, now is not the time to give up.

What you need to do is to find out what customers want. Have a look at successful competitors to see what they offer. Perhaps they have a bigger stock range than you could ever afford. Instead of competiting with them why not sign up for their affiliate program? You wouldn’t have to splash out on large amount of stock either. Here are my tips that work for me if I’m trying out a new business idea

1) Do your research, look at your competitors in the field you are choosing

If you can’t compete, can you go in with them by signing up to their affiliate programs?

2) Write down your vision, where would like to see your business in a year’s time, 5 years time, 10 years time

3) Break down your vision into manageable goals (this will keep you focussed)

4) Offer something different to your competitors – can you give a free E-book to give away?

5) Think about how you are going to market your business. A website is a must, but would flyers that you hand out be more suitable

6) Keep tweaking the idea until you find a winning formula.

Fantastic tip

If you can’t visualise a vision of where you want to be – stand on a chair . Believe or not it helps me sometimes to get a different view on a dilema.

7) To some exercise – working from home can be isolating but exercise will help invirogate you.

8) Work with other people around , you could work in the local library if you can’t afford private office space

9) Make sure you have a structure to your day, like you would at work

10) Build relaxation time in the evening and at weekends.

How did I become so successful? I’m sharing you right now the way I turned a dream into reality.

You’ve got a great idea but can you really hack working from home?I’m going to put you off right from the start. If the idea of working from home and being a boss sounds like freedom then I want to dispel some myths – running your own business is NOT for everyone. Don’t listen to those get rich quick schemes, they don’t work.

Business from scratch

However, I’m going to share what works for me – my hobby website has taken over 300,000 orders  and believe me I wouldn’t want to not have my business. I love coming to work to our purpose-built warehouse/offices near Gatwick Airport and so do my team.

Remember I’m just an ordinary guy who has built a business from scratch! No financial handouts, nothing, nil, zero.

You have to have a vision right from day one if you’re serious about making money.What do you want to achieve, do you want to have a business the size of Amazon or want something that just helps pay the bills?

It’s up to you

It’s up to you. With your vision (write it down by the way) you can then break it down and set goals that you want to achieve – small steps and all that.

And here’s what really motivates me, it’s not just the money (who wouldn’t want to feel satisfied with seeing the money roll in) but achieving those little goals. When you tick off those goals, that gives you a push to achieve more.

Richard Branson

Take all the most successful business leaders such as Richard Branson and Lord Alan Sugar – they could have given up working years ago but it’s the satisfaction of completing a goal that gives them the push to keep going.

It can be hard working on your own and by yourself. Those goals can sometimes be hard to achieve so you do need lots of self-discipline.

In those early days I had deliveries coming to my house and orders to dispatch.

There was no time to sit down and watch tv during the day. These were my daily goals to get deliveries out  - my next goal at the time was to get staff to help me and a warehouse. I achieved both within a couple of years. I wanted a large house, I achieved that a year or so later. Amazing.

Dreaming 

So the more orders I was taking, the more it got me to start dreaming and building new goals. I knew what I wanted to achieve and I’m proud of what I’ve achieved so far – you can do the same. You’ll get down days but keep your vision in mind all the time and break down it down into your goals. You can do this!

Today, my vision is to continue building my e-commerce business and help others through How To Make Money.co.uk.

Let’s say you want to sell over the web – you can have a ‘virtual shop’ from your back bedroom and have sales while you carry on your day-to-day life. It’s a great way to begin without the initial outlay. It’s exactly what I did all those years ago – and look at me now operating from a large warehouse in Redhill, Surrey.

What you’re thinking of selling

Let’s look at what you’re thinking of selling. It makes sense to know you’ve got a winner and are not wasting time with a “dead duck”.

You want to sell socks for instance and handmade ones online?

You’ll want to check out how many people are looking for the term “handmade socks” in Google Keyword Tool:

Click “exact match on the left”, this means that people are typing in those exact words.

Well, there’s a surprise no one is searching for that term “handmade socks” so the chances are it won’t sell well. Plus there’s lots of other competition from people selling socks.

But if the thing you have in mind has more than 21k ‘local searches’ a month you could be onto something. Plus if there isn’t much competition, you’re definitely on the right lines.

Money

Don’t have the money or the room to invest in stock? Don’t worry you can still make tons of cash. This cool site will help you get started. It’s called Affiliate Snipers and works by giving visitors more choice – current internet marketing research is that giving more personal choice to customers helps improve sales.

This software works by having a little shopping widget appear on your web page, asking visitors to click it and tell you exactly what they want to buy from massive companies like Amazon, Walmart, Target and many more  - definite worth a look.

Domain name

Whether you are selling stocks or setting up an affiliate site, the next stages are the same.

You’ll then need to buy a domain name from place such
as 123-reg. You’ll also need someone to host your website – type in website hosts.

You’ll be told your “named servers” by your website hosts – pass this onto the site you are buying your domain name from – they’ll need to re-direct the domain name to your website host’s site and the area where your website will be on.

PayPal

Some hosts, will allow to create a template which you
can use for your virtual shop front. You may find that
they come with a way of taking payment over the web. The simpliest thing to do is to use PayPal to take your sales – at least whilst you are setting up.

If a template does not come with this PayPal facility you could ask someone to help you by set this up by posting a project on www.elance.com – one of my favourite websites. Providers around the world will bid on your particular project.

If you don’t have any web programming skills, I would again ask for help on Elance.com.

And then it’s a question of spreading the word about your site and getting Google and the other search engines to rank your site.

How To Make Money HQ

What the heck does that mean – sounds really complicated. I don’t need it to raise for my search engine rankings, why bother…Search Engine Optimisation, there that wasn’t too hard to say was it and it’s not as complicated as some experts would have you believe.

I know, I do this stuff day in, day out through my e-commerce business.Think of a search engine from a human point of view who perhaps can not see. You want to point out everything on your site that someone who is visually impaired may find a struggle.

We’re talking about making sure that images are labelled – using ALT tags (your web designer can show you where these are).

If there’s a person in the image and you name them, use capital letters for the first letter of their name. If there’s a place, name that.

Rename files names

Rename file names too which include your keywords (more on this later).I’m learning that Google is now liking captions, so use these whilst you can.

Now your search engine needs some help. In the meta tag -that’s the bit of text which is displayed under website listings in Google etc put your keyword and a catchy couple of lines inviting people to visit your site.

A good example would be “Cake Tins [the keywords] – The UK’s best on the net and at the lowest price guranteed”

There’s another tag too, the header tag. This is the very top blue bar which has writing on when you go into a website. Again put the keyword first and then add a compelling description about your site.

This can’t be all there is to SEO?

Well, make sure you have H1 and H2 tags – what? Heading 1 and Heading 2 tags (Google like those in your web programmer will know about giving you these options.

Tip

Here’s a good tip. Include plenty of fresh content on your website – that means updating it as much as possible with new relevant and quality content.

Google has a team of people that manually go through sites so you got to make sure your site is up to good English spelling and grammar standards.

Keywords?  What are they?

You mentioned these earlier Alan. I did.

Go to https://adwords.google.com/

Think of the words that if you were a user people would use to find you when they look for something in Google. You could see what suggestions family and friends come up.
If you’re selling cake tins, type cake tins into Google adwords.
Select exact match (in the left column) – that means people are only typing in cake tins. Then select local – local means the country.

You’ll then see how many times people have search for the keyword and the competition (the greener the slider, the more competition). Opt for a term that has about 75% competition. A good search result is 40k searches a month.

Domain names  - how old is yours?

Google also likes domain names which have been around for a while and which have the keyword in the title.

Have a look at 123-reg to see what’s available. Try to avoid dashes in your domain name if you can.

Use your keywords in the content and sometimes in the headings of your regular fresh content.
Use the keyword naturally – over use of keywords will cause Google to penalise you.

Why is my website not at the top of Google? How frustrating, you put weeks of preparations, no months of sheer hard work into your wonderful new website only for it to show (well barely on page 4 of Google).

No one quite knows

No one quite knows the exact formula that Google uses to rank pages (the same too for other search engines). And if they did, they would soley be disappointed as it keeps changing all the time. We’re talking about “natural search rankings” – the sites  that appear below the ads in Google when you search for something.

There are many factors that make sites rise up the rankings. I’m sharing with you in this article the importance of links, look out for my other articles coming soon which affect rankings. These include:

- keywords
- website usability
- meta tags
- social media
- how long people spend on your site (the bounce rate)
- the age of your domain name

Plus other secrets, which I’ll be sharing based on my own daily experience of running my successful e-commerce business.

Google loves links

Google loves links – although they do not carry as much weight as they used to. Wind the clock back only a few years and site rankings often increased then by the number of links website had back to them.

Today, there are many other factors but links are still important but the right ones.

Want to know a secret?

You could try getting links from blog sites in your field. By becoming an expert you might be able to get a link back from your site but it may take a number of posts before you are allowed a link back to your site. You’ll need to post proper comments, not spam type comments.

When you are allowed to have a link back to your site, make sure it’s a “ do follow” link. “Do follow” means  that when you click it you’re taken back to your website.

Only join and post on blog sites which are on the same theme as your website. My team have posted on many hobby related blogs for my large hobby e-commerce site. Google loves links from other themed related websites.

Fancy a spot of writing?

Another way of getting good links is from article websites such as Ezine articles http://ezinearticles.com/. You submit a well written article of over 500 words and if it’s approved you’ll get a link back to your site.

What else do you need to know?

Download Google’s tool bar.

You’ll see at the top there’s something called a “page rank” . You’ll notice whatever site you go on, the page rank will change. Take the BBC news website, Google gives this site 8/10 as it’s a trusted resource – the more green on the mini page rank slider the better.

Get links back

You need to try and get links back from sites with high page rankings – 3 is average, 4 is good, 5 is excellent and even higher page ranks, well you’ve done well!

You’ll find also that even within website, the page rankings differ.

As your build up your links do it over a period time, you don’t want Google to think you are geting spam links.

By the way, have you watched the free video at the top of the page – incredible how technology can be used. They’re making bucks out of mobile phones, you good too.

I wouldn’t want to share this with just anyone but if getting links sounds – well tedious and time consuming to you – this is my sure-fired way to get high quality links and reduce time.

Sounds too good to be true? This is all natural, there are no ‘black hat tricks’ here. I outsource this part of my work ‘link building’ by putting up a post for the work on www.elance.com

You could also post a project inviting people to write articles for you too.

When you post your project ask for links on the same theme as your website and you are looking for doing this over say a six week period. Another sure-fired winning way from How To Make Money HQ.

This is a gem your website designer may not have told you..

It really makes a different of where you put something on a website. For instance, I know with my large hobby website (it’s taken over 300,000 orders – we now have a large warehouse in Redhill, Surrey) that if I change a bit of text it can make all the difference.

How do I know this? I send some visitors to one page and another set of visitors to another virtually identical page. It’s called A/B testing – if you’re serious about targeting and getting more traffic and more sales, you’ll want to try it.

You’ll want to sign up for a Google Analytics account and go to the optimser section.

Experiment

Experiment first by changing words such as “lowest” or “cheapest”.

I have a steam mop site and set up three identical pages, the only difference was I advertised the steam mop at three different prices £19.99, £24.99 and “29.99

Which page do you think had more people clicking through. You want think the lowest price – wrong.

It was the £24.99, that’s right I had more sales selling at a higher price so it pays to test and these split tests work a treat. Go have a look now at your Google Anaytics account.
